ÄUßERE HEBRIDEN & ST. KILDA

Your chance to feel the magic and solitude of the Outer Hebrides and St Kilda aboard a tall ship. Shake free from modern life and take off on a sea adventure, out into the Atlantic and on to Hirta where you can experience an ancient way of life.

Starting in Oban, this gateway to the isles provides a wonderful starting point for your holiday of a lifetime to experience the magic of the Hebridean Isles and St Kilda. The focus point for the voyage will be to reach St Kilda, which is a world heritage site. Lying out in the Atlantic, 45 miles west of the Outer Hebrides, this archipelago was once home to Britain’s most isolated community. The history of the people, its remoteness and amazing wildlife make the islands an exceptionally desirable destination for anyone interested in natural history.

Steady will then take you on a tour round the archipelago, heading for Stac Lee and Boreray to visit the largest gannet (Guga) colony in the world. This majestic sight will entrance you, millions of sea birds circling the cliffs coming in to nest on the sheer rock face. Leaving St Kilda behind, we head out for the Monach’s. This silent and special group became a nature reserve for the undisturbed machair and their Grey Seal population. About 10,000 come ashore each autumn, making it one of the largest such colonies in the world. With shoes in hand, wander through the flowers and herbs relishing in the silent beauty here.

Cruising Uist and Harris, we will visit some of the most stunning scenery in the world, from white sandy beaches with crystal clear water to stark rocky hills patched in purple heather. Each day you will have the time to walk ashore, climb a mountain or wander along these perfect beaches before heading back for a cosy evening on board. Turning back towards home, the Shiant Isles and the large puffin colony will entrance you before sailing towards the imposing peaks of Skye. Close by are the Small Isles, Rum, Canna and Eigg, each one worth a visit for their individuality of scenery and wildlife. Rounding Ardnamurchan Point, the most westerly of mainland Britain, we may anchor in Tobermory before the final long day sail back toward your final night moored at Kerrera just outside of Oban.

Puffins, guillemots and razorbills are all breeding at this time of year. Get close up to the burrows and capture images like this! Seals are a common sight, either sunning on rocks or out fishing in the sound. If we are lucky, basking sharks and Minke whales are also feeding in the plankton rich waters of the western Isles. Scotland must be most famous for Eagles and deer. Mull is the ideal place to spot them if we are lucky get close enough.

Please note: St Kilda is never a guaranteed destination due to weather and swell conditions.
